Critical Reality: “Scream Queens”
With Halloween around the corner, I think it would be appropriate to discuss “Scream Queens,” a Ryan Murphy show that started airing at the beginning of the semester.
The show focuses on the fictitious Wallace University’s Kappa Kappa Tau (KKT) sorority as they struggle to stay alive with a serial killer, referred to as “The Red Devil,” on the loose. These new killings relate back to a death that occurred 20 years earlier in the Kappa Kappa Tau house.
Snobby president Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) leads the house followed by her minions: Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande), Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) and Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin). Chanel and her minions are, hands down, my least favorite characters in the show because of how mean they are to the pledges. They won’t give these pledges a break!
The only thing that is clear in this show is that “The Red Devil” is targeting the sorority, which most likely has to do with the death of one of its members in 1995.
In 1995, as explained in the show, one of the KKT members died while giving birth due to the neglect of her fellow sisters. After the girl’s death, her baby was given away and nothing has been heard about the baby since. I have a feeling that “The Red Devil” might be the girl’s baby coming back for revenge.
A lot of mystery surrounds that death, since Wallace University dean Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) covered it up entirely in 1995. Now, she is actively trying to do away with the KKT sorority as a whole.
After catching up on the episodes, one question remains in my mind: who is “The Red Devil,” and how is he/she/they related to the death of the KKT member in 1995?
There are so many suspects to choose from that I made a mental list. The first suspect on my list is Pete Martinez (Diego Boneta). For one thing, he has a grudge against Chanel Oberlin. For another, KKT pledge Grace Gardner (Skyler Samuels) found “The Red Devil” costume in his closet. He could be the Red Devil, but then again, maybe not.
The second person on my list is dean Munsch. She could be killing them off one by one so that there would not be any members left for the sorority to continue. I have a STRONG feeling it’s dean Munsch, but I could be wrong!
The final person on my list is Boone Clemens (Nick Jonas). The biggest reason for him making the list is because he faked his death! Not only that, but Boone happens to be working with “The Red Devil.” In the show it is mentioned that there are possibly two Red Devils, so I think Boone could be one of them.
Honestly, dean Munsch and Boone Clemens are “The Red Devils” to me and no one can convince me otherwise. Besides being a murder mystery, excitement comes from the sorority drama and comedy that goes along with it. All in all, “Scream Queens” is a good show that has a lot of potential to be even better—but I wouldn’t want to visit Wallace University as an incoming freshman anytime soon!
