Pumpkin spice and everything nice: Mosaic’s review of campus’ fall drinks
I’m a huge fan of fall flavors. Fall is my favorite season, not only because of the cute cardigans and sweaters and the changing colors of the leaves, but also because of the delicious fall treats.
The fall favorite among students tends to be pumpkin spice lattes (PSL). There’s numerous options on Main Street, so it can be confusing to sip upon the most worthy of fall drinks. Therefore, I stuffed myself with plenty of pumpkin, so you don’t have to suffer from excess sugar and caffeine (the way I did). Below is a list of all the fall-themed beverages Main Street has to offer:
Harvest moon latte is Brew Haha!’s featured fall drink with cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as white mocha. The drink itself is not as sweet as most of the drinks on this list; it has a fair deal of spice but could have used a bit more. It feels a bit like a dessert rather than a drink, especially with the pumpkin spice whipped cream, which is reminiscent of PEEPs with its exorbitant sweetness. I wouldn’t mind having this drink again, but I would definitely omit the whipped cream.
Pumpkin spice lattes are known to be cloyingly sweet, but this is extremely sweet. If you are fine with risking a sugar coma, then this drink may be suited to your tastes. If you can get past the sugar, the drink is pretty representative of fall; it is spicy and has notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. In my opinion, it smells a lot better than it tastes, so I wouldn’t mind buying this again and just leaving it in my room.
Don’t get me wrong; I love Dunkin’ and drink their coffee almost every day. However, saying their pumpkin-spiced coffee is sweet would be a vast understatement. Your sweat will probably taste sweet after drinking this beverage, which isn’t that bad now that I think about it. However, I would definitely caution against drinking it if you cannot handle sweet coffee. If you want to have this fall beverage with less sugar I would recommend adding fewer pumps of pumpkin-flavored syrup. For instance, a small coffee normally contains two pumps, a medium coffee has three pumps and a large coffee has four pumps, so subtract by one or more pumps.
I have never been to Little Goat before, but I have always heard wonderful things about this quaint coffee shop, so I had high expectations; they did not disappoint. The autumn harvest latte does not contain pumpkin but is an excellent fall alternative to the typical PSL. It is the least sweet option so far on the list and was a refreshing break from all the sugar. The drink comes with spice-infused maple syrup and whipped cream on top. The latte doesn’t feel like a dessert and can be enjoyed on a day-to-day basis (I know I will).
My last stop on the journey to find the perfect autumn-themed latte was Brewed Awakenings. By this time, I was pretty sick from all the sugar, so when I saw a sugar-free pumpkin pie latte, I leapt at the opportunity and drank it instead of the regular pumpkin pie latte. The latte contains minimal sweetness but also a lack of spice. Fall beverages are known for notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, but there was none such flavor. Instead, the sugar-free pumpkin pie latte was not reminiscent of fall but could be enjoyed often due to its lack of sugar (although I don’t know why you would want to).
Most of the options for fall-flavored drinks are on the sweeter side, so it can be difficult to find an adequate option. However, there are some enjoyable fall treats on Main Street to choose from, so don’t fret! After all, fall only comes once a year, so take full advantage of the opportunity to sip on some pumpkin-y goodness.
